In 1817, The Sovereign was reborn as the embodiment of the Gold Standard.
It has remained a constant through two centuries of economic and social change, still relevant as a globally traded bullion coin and sought-after as a commemorative coin. This special release returns to Benedetto Pistrucci’s original ‘garter’ masterpiece, struck for the first time since 1820.
The familiar St George and the dragon design is surrounded by the full Old French inscription and garter border first struck on the Sovereigns of 1817. For this 2017 edition of the 22 carat gold Proof coin, the date appears on the obverse for the first time since 1887.
